System Operations Engineer/Analyst

Summary of Responsibilities:

Bring your positive energy to ATC! We’re looking for a System Operations Engineer/Analyst to provide a variety of technical engineering support services to the System Operation Center (SOC) to update, develop, and maintain the Energy Management System (EMS) along with other control center automation systems. This role is deeply involved with supporting our operations at ATC by conducting hardware and software engineering work to ensure reliable and economic interconnected electric transmission system operations.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshooting of EMS hardware and software to diagnose malfunctioning equipment, system software or applications.
  • Provides technical support for Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) problems at ATC electrical substations.
  • Provides technical support and training to operations personnel on EMS operation, transmission network security, analysis, simulation, and optimization, supervisory control and data acquisition.
  • Provides on call support, after hours support on a rotating schedule.
  • Maintains proficiency in new hardware and software technologies applicable to the EMS and system operations.
  • Leads the design, installation, and maintenance of EMS databases and displays to support user and application requirements.
  • Leads in researching, developing, testing, and implementing enhancements and upgrades to the EMS.
  • Develops and maintains test documentation for upgrades.
  • Performs computer analysis and manipulation of data, as well as acquisition of data from other computer sources.
  • Participates in the administration of EMS computer systems.
  • Assists with the evaluation and purchase of new software and hardware for the EMS computer systems.
  • Documents and works closely with vendors and consultants to successfully resolve variances to specifications and/or contracts, and to add EMS functionality.
  • Obtains detailed costs and quotations for hardware and/or software options for various projects.
  • Prepares and presents technical options and cost analysis.
  • Monitors technical compliance to specifications and/or contracts.
  • Maintains compliance with the applicable Reliability Standards developed by NERC (North American Reliability Corporation), in particular those pertaining to Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP).
  • Demonstrates compliance with ATC’s Code of Conduct, all company policies and procedures, and all laws and regulations that govern ATC.
  • May be called upon to serve before, during, and after a Transmission Emergency Response Plan (TERP) event; such event may require performing functions that are outside the scope of your regular job.
  • Demonstrates leadership in the area of safety.
  • This requires observing and enforcing safety rules and practices, encouraging safe work behaviors, and promptly correcting conditions and unsafe behaviors that may lead to accidents.
  • Provides on call support, after hours support on a rotating schedule.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering or computer science.

Minimum Experience

  • Strong knowledge in System Operations Engineering or related power-engineering work.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as C, C++, Visual Basic and Fortran is preferred.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages such as VBScript and Perl are preferred.
  • Demonstrated application development skills.
  • Understanding of Interconnected Electrical Transmission System Operations.
  • Knowledge of technical software and hardware compatibility with computer systems.
  • Some work experience in application support, deployment, support of custom software and code management tracking tools is preferred.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to plan and meet goals in a self directed work team environment with minimal supervision.

Physical Requirements

  • Executive, administrative or clerical position in which employee is primarily involved with sedentary work, including keyboarding.
  • Requires occasional lifting objects 10 to 15 pounds and/or light physical activity including bending, squatting, stooping, twisting, reaching, walking, standing and working on irregular surfaces
