Systems Engineer

Bremerton WA General Dynamics Electric Boat

Overview

Department 704 (D704) Overhaul and Repair Engineering consists of a diverse group of engineers that support hands on submarine construction. Specifically, D704 supports the top U.S. Navy priority of fleet readiness by accomplishing overhaul, repair, and modernization work on active duty SEAWOLF, VIRGINIA, OHIO, and LOS ANGELES class submarines. D704 accomplishes this support beginning to end from developing work breakdown structures to supporting final system test and ship certification at Electric Boat's shipyard and various off-site U.S. Navy shipyards and facilities. Opportunities to travel to other submarine repair facilities do become available as required to support fleet maintenance.

The department is cognizant of all non-nuclear systems and components on a submarine, functioning as a dynamic multi discipline team focusing on electrical systems, mechanical/piping systems, and structural components.

Common Electrical Systems

  • Non-propulsion electronic systems, including fly-by-wire ship control, weapons launch control, navigation, sonar, instrumentation and indications
  • Power distribution, electrical methods, electrical hull penetrators, and electromechanical actuation.
  • Voice communications, interior communication circuits, and fiber-optic data distribution.

Common Mechanical/Piping Systems

  • Valves, actuators, main condensers/heat exchangers, pipe and machinery fabrication and welding
  • Weapons and countermeasure launching, steering and diving, hatch operability, masts and antennas, and shaft and propulsion, hydraulics, and compressed air.

Common Structural Components

  • Pressure hull boundary and non-pressure hull boundary ship structures
  • Structure fabrication and welding
  • Submarine coating and cathodic protection
  • Non-metallic coverings and treatments

D704 operates in a collaborative and fast paced manner to ensure safety, stealth, maneuverability, and habitability of a submarine are maintained to the highest level. Engineers interface consistently with other Electric Boat departments including scheduling, quality assurance, material sourcing, contracts, cost engineering, system testing, operations skilled trades, and project management as well as U.S. Navy submariners.

D704 responsibilities:

  • Planning of submarine maintenance, repair, and modernization work through the development of clear and concise procedures contained in technical work documents. This includes interpretation of shipbuilding specifications, military specifications and standards, maintenance requirements, construction drawings, and contractual requirements.
  • Providing in-person proactive support to shipyard execution efforts onboard submarines and throughout the shipyard.
  • Support system troubleshooting to provide timely technical resolutions for execution road blocks.
  • Collaborating with D704 system engineers as well as interfacing departments to ensure compliance with Shipyard and U.S. Navy procedures.
  • Evaluating technical rationale to support the approval of non-conforming conditions.
  • Supporting test and certification of systems impacted by the technical work documents.
  • Assisting with off-site projects at various Electric Boat and U.S. Navy facilities.
  • Developing an understanding of specific non-nuclear areas and systems of a submarine identified in the technical work documents.

Qualifications

  • An ABET- accredited Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Engineering.
  • The ability to obtain Department of Defense (DoD) Secret clearance.
  • Candidate must be from organizations outside of operations (Casciano/Gabriel).

Preferred:

  • An active DoD Secret or Top Secret clearance.
  • The flexibility to support critical work and schedule needs in a supportive team environment.
  • Willingness to travel and support extended off-site assignments as needed.
  • Candidates must be willing and physically able to climb steep stairs and ladders to enter submarine and dry-docks, and ascend/descend scaffolding.

Skills

Candidates must possess strong written and oral communication skills and be able to effectively collaborate with a wide range of internal and external organizations at multiple levels of management. Candidates must be highly motivated and well organized with strong project management skills, and be capable of working both independently and in a team environment. The candidate must have a strong fundamental understanding of engineering concepts and basic understanding of relationship between electronic, mechanical/piping, and structural systems/components. Candidates must have a strong ability to solve technical problems and an aptitude for learning and applying technical requirements.
