Advanced Lead Control Systems Engineer

Lynn MA GE

Job Description Summary

The Advanced Lead Controls Systems engineer is responsible for the design, development and verification of engine control logic, application software and system interfaces. In this role, you will have the critical responsibility of supporting the fielded rotorcraft and military turbofan fleets. You will be a part of a team integrating GE Aerospace engines with new aircrafts, including novel vertical lift vehicles such as the Hybrid-Electric Demonstrator (HEX) and revolutionary designs like NASA’s X-59 Quesst program. You will be on the front line for control systems, ensuring GE Aerospace engines perform safely, efficiently and robustly, while you gain hands-on expertise that will last a lifetime.

The Advanced Lead Control Systems Engineer will utilize prior experience to develop objectives for self and others and execute engineering plans for aircraft engine control systems. This role is for experienced engineers who can lead large teams and complex projects in one, or several of the following areas: propulsion system simulations and transient analysis; classical or modern control algorithm design; model based software development; signal processing, fault detection and accommodation; airframe and engine systems integration and requirements derivation.

Job Description

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

Execute the analysis, design, test, and integration activities using sound engineering principles and business standards, practices, procedures and product/program requirements to deliver engine controls solutions for GE Aviation products.  Activities include:

  • Provide technical leadership to personnel supporting the assigned project to achieve operational requirements of the engine control for vertical-lift (rotorcraft) or fixed-wing engine applications.
  • Work with airframe manufacturers, such as Sikorsky, Leonardo, Bell, Boeing, and customers, such as the US Government and foreign military service partners in defining requirements.
  • Leverage experience with model based software design tools to construct and test controls system solutions.
  • Verify system operation through desktop simulation, hardware-in-the-loop lab tests (dry rigs and wet rigs), ground engine test and flight test.
  • Define key characteristics of the electronics, fuel, hydraulic systems, sensors, actuators and control logic design required to achieve the control system functional requirements for power management, I/O signal processing, fault detection, accommodation, rotor governor or thrust response.
  • Perform linear analysis and non-linear simulations to evaluate aircraft, engine and component control system response.
  • Create technical documentation consistent with engineering policies and procedures while delivering control system certification reports for the US Military, US FAA, European EASA and other national airworthiness agencies.
  • Participate and lead process standardization and GE Lean simplification or automation efforts that improve productivity, quality and speed.
  • Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments.
  • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews.

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Computer Science from an accredited college or university
  • At least 3 years of experience in an engineering position

Desired Characteristics:

  • Proficiency with real time control systems development tools (e.g. DOORS, Beacon, Matlab, Simulink, NPSS, Change & Synergy) and processes for requirements & logic design, simulation and validation at the hardware in the loop environment, engine and flight tests levels
  • Experience with software languages in the definition or implementation of automation, such as Python, C++, Visual Basic
  • Experience with formal software or systems development processes and standards, such as DO-178 or  MIL-HDBK-516C
  • Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering and Development or standards, such as DO-331
  • Experience with digital communication protocols, such as Mil Std 1553, AFDX, ARINC429, RS485 and CAN bus
  • Experience with controls software verification testing and/or closed loop engine testing
  • Knowledge of reliability analysis, FMEAs, fault trees and engine condition monitoring
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and documentation skills

This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.
