The Automation Engineer is an integral part of the Engineering Team and is responsible for the development and engineering of new, innovative automation solutions for the next generation of indoor farming.
Lead the conceptualization, initiation, design, development and implementation of new and improved automation systems including: design generation, prototype development, engineering specifications, component qualification, vendor evaluation, functionality and quality testing, commissioning and technology transfer.
Responsible for aspects of project management from feasibility, planning, design, construction, commissioning and handover and ensures that all key project performance objectives are met regarding efficiencies, waste, throughput and staffing, as well as delivering to the project schedule, safely, and within the budgetary limits.
Understand, interpret and refine automation testing procedures and standards to support the effective design, validation, and implementation of new equipment and technology.
Create project cost and savings estimates, final package component specifications, Bills of Materials, equipment specifications and functional specifications.
Collaborates closely with all cross functional project team members and stakeholders.
Identify and implement cost saving initiatives to improve efficiency, reduce cost of goods sold.
Establish trial protocol to ensure equipment performs as specified and meets all project success criteria.
Established FAT requirements for equipment and systems, attends FAT testing and approves equipment for delivery to the project site.
Ensures project financial objectives are met while maintaining compliance with all internal and external regulations.
Demonstrates leadership and commitment in the management of all health and safety related project activities, including communicating safety goals, establishing roles and responsibilities, and holding team members’ accountable.
Is responsible for the establishment and maintenance of a secure site working environment, controlling risks to project activities, property and personnel from external factors.
Utilizes systematic approach for project management in line with company expectations and promotes the use of tools for continuous improvement.
REQUIRED: 5 – 10 years experience demonstrating knowledge and experience with developing and deploying automation systems including automatic conveyance, robotic manipulation/picking and vision systems.
Proficient in Auto-CAD and/or Solidworks and process simulation software for factory automation.
Must have proven experience in automation systems, performance specifications, and testing protocols.
Experience conducting design reviews.
A demonstrated knowledge and experience with mechanical process equipment, process automation systems, plumbing pneumatics, steel and aluminum welding and sanitary design.
Strong analytical thinking, problem solving skills and an aptitude for detail required and a proven track record of demonstrable leadership qualities a must.
Must have strong communication and organizational skills, including the ability to facilitate meetings and communicate outcomes, prepare progress reports and track project financials, and develop presentations and present in a cross functional environment to internal and external audiences.
Strong interpersonal skills, managing relationships with internal customers and vendors.
Experience with food safety standards, risk analysis, FMEAs, design controls and sanitary design best practices
Manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Travel requirements will vary depending on project location but will require full time presence on site during the project construction and commissioning/handover phases.
Office environment requires the ability to sit and work on a computer for long periods of time.
Physical requirements to work on projects may include lifting of up to 50 lbs.
Site visits may require the ability to climb stairs, walk long distances (more than 100 yards) and stooping, kneeling, or bending for extended periods of time.
