Business Systems Programmer

Job Summary/Purpose:
The Business Systems Programmer will be part of a team responsible for maintaining the college’s Ellucian Banner enterprise resource planning (ERP) platform and other related system integrations.

Responsibilities include analysis, development, integration, testing, implementation and documentation of the college’s Ellucian Banner enterprise resource planning (ERP) platform and other integrated systems. This position participates in Management Information Systems (MIS) projects as a software developer. Assigned projects may incorporate changes to existing functionality or new functionality. The Business Systems Programmer also develops interfaces to external systems.

This individual will provide technical advice and support to users including troubleshooting issues, creating reports and data extracts, and data analysis. The Business Systems Programmer works closely with a larger team comprised of Business Analysts, Banner programmers and DBA’s to manage all aspects of the ERP system and related integrations for COCC.
Essential Functions:
1. Assist in management of the ERP software application including performing installation procedures, programming, updating tables and rules, and troubleshooting technical problems.
2. Develops or modifies interfaces to other business systems and applications as needed.
3. While not expected to prioritize departmental initiatives, once a project is approved and drafted, the programmer is expected to manage medium scale initiatives independently, with limited supervision.
4. Concurrently manages multiple projects through completion.
5. Consistently develop, document, and maintain IT processes and solutions.
6. Regularly interacts independently with end-users to troubleshoot their technical problems.
7. Consult with and assist users to define, address and resolve a wide variety of challenges from across the college.
8. Develops database views and reports.
9. Perform other duties as they pertain to the overall objective of the position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities, or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

1. Knowledge of relational databases and programming languages such as SQL or PL/SQL.
2. Possess excellent interpersonal skills with a strong service orientation, including ability to communicate technical and complex information both verbally and in writing.
3. Ability to work cooperatively with, and contribute to, a diverse workplace through ideas or experience.
4. Able to demonstrate the ability to perform duties and responsibilities outlined above.
5. Able to develop, write, and debug software or use other tools to work with data and produce reports or other data outcomes.
6. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret information technology administration guides, user manuals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations.
7. Strong organizational, analytical, problem solving, time management and documentation skills.
8. Must have a flexible schedule, as hours may vary during evenings or weekends as needed.
9. Able to work occasional weekends and after-hours as required.

In addition, the individual is expected to follow all College work rules and policies.
Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:
Regular office hours as established. A flexible work schedule, including nights and weekends, may be necessary due to the nature of the responsibilities. Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors in an office environment engaged in work of a primarily sedentary nature. Requires the ability to work at a workstation for extended periods. Regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. Physical movements involve guiding, feeding materials into proper position. Lifting objects vary daily, ranging from 1lb to over 25lbs. All individuals are required to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. Experience with software development and business database applications.
2. Excellent written communication and documentation skills.
3. Experience as a programmer using relational databases such as SQL or PL/SQL.
4. One-year of experience working in a Linux/Unix operating system environment.

Special Qualifications:
The following qualifications are desirable, but not required:

• Familiarity with Ellucian’s Banner ERP is desirable.
• Programming experience within Ellucian’s Banner ERP platform is desirable.
• Proficiency in the following a plus: PL/SQL, Oracle Forms, Unix/Linux administration, TOAD, Pro C, Java programming, JavaScript, CSS, XML, Weblogic, Argos Datablock Design.
• Experience in creating reports from an Oracle or MS SQL database system, using a report writing application such as Argos, Cognos, or Crystal Reports is a plus.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field or an equivalency of at least three to four years of related work experience in lieu of a degree.
