Position Summary

Cloud Native Engineering is a high-performance team that focuses on providing hybrid cloud solutions in support of custom built software. Engineers on this team are responsible for delivering, automating, and supporting private and public cloud services as well as DevOps capabilities. This role will handle advanced, complex tasks including upgrades, platform automation scripting, and design and setup of new technologies with minimal supervision. Cloud engineers should have a strong background in server administration, scripting, DevOps, CI/CD, cloud and container technologies, micro-services, and AWS or Azure.

The Cloud Native Engineering team is located at the Duke Energy Innovation Center at Optimist Hall with product teams delivering a wide-range of leading edge solutions. As a Cloud Native Engineering – Software Engineer, you will collaborate with technology peers and business partners to design, build and deploy new software using agile/XP/test driven development using a wide range of technologies and solutions. You will will be focused on developing well-designed, efficient code that adheres to the latest industry standards and assist in coding, testing, and debugging new software or making enhancements to existing software for customers. You will be working with designers, developers, and product owners in a small team setting to integrate software components into fully functional software systems spanning multiple business areas.


Work with architects and others to understand technical, security and business requirements
Design, publish, and maintain standard hybrid cloud offerings for the organization
Contribute to technology strategy and roadmaps around cloud and automation platforms
Manage orchestration, configuration, and provisioning automation for private and public ‘as-a-service’ cloud offerings
Identify and drive opportunities to improve automation for deployment, management, and process execution.
Advance IT’s DevOps capabilities through intelligent design and delivery
Develop and promote standard operating procedures
Participate in 24×7 on-call rotation
Maintain documentation of cloud services, reference architecture, automation processes and toolsets
Suggest and test new technologies to improve operational efficiency
Ability to work independently on sprint user stories but also have a willingness to work collaboratively with the team to solve problems

Position must sit in Charlotte, NC
Up to 5% travel

Basic/Required Qualifications

Two (2) year IT Technical or Associate’s degree and three (3) or more years of relevant work experience , OR five (5) years of related work experience without a degreein addition to a degree

Desired Qualifications

Experience with one or more of the following: Java, Angular, JS, REST services, Cloud, Swift
Understanding of Web Service API’s, web-based systems architecture, cloud-based systems architecture and service oriented architecture (SOA)
Understanding of Cloud Native principles and techniques such as Microservices/BDD; containers/Docker; Agile; 12 factor apps; test driven development; cloud
Experience building new software using agile/XP/test driven development
Ability to program well-designed, efficient code that adheres to the latest industry standards
Experience with troubleshooting, debugging and upgrading software programs
Experience with the integration of software components into fully functional software systems
Strong ability to work with designers, developers, and product owners in a small team setting
Leadership, communication, presentation, and influencing skills
Ability to absorb change and continue with positive results.
Self-motivated and at ease in a constantly changing environment
Understanding of IT DevOps principles and tools
