About the Unit
The Center for Data Science and Public Policy (DSaPP) at the University of Chicago is a collaboration between The Harris School of Public Policy and the Computation Institute to further the use of data science in policy research and practice. Our work includes educating current and future policymakers, doing data science projects with government, nonprofit, academic, and foundation partners, and developing new methods and open-source tools that support and extend the use of data science for public policy and social impact. Our team is made up of data scientists and researchers from computer science, statistics, and social science backgrounds to bring in methods from all of these disciplines, software engineers to make sure our work becomes usable code and implemented, topic experts and project managers who help get things done.
The Center for Data Science & Public Policy (DSaPP) at the University of Chicago has an opening for a Data Science Project Manager with a strong background in project management, ideally in a technical and data science environment. The Project Manager will manage several projects related to economic development, public health, education, environment, criminal justice, and international development in partnership with government agencies and nonprofits.
Lead the project management of multiple projects that are underway at DSaPP
Collaborate and provide support for an interdisciplinary team of computer scientists, statisticians and social scientists to keep them focused on achieving specific project objectives and development tasks
Manage relationships with external project partners (government agencies, non-profits, researchers) and coordinate multi-stakeholder working groups
Oversee the creation of project deliverables, assigning tasks to team members, managing sprints, ensuring accountability within the team, and writing grant reports in a fast-moving environment
Ensure all project artifacts and documents are safely archived following project completion
Manage and track budget and resources across projects
Help define and scope data science projects with government agencies and nonprofit partners
Coordinate and organize events, workshops, and meetings related to projects and DSaPP
Contribute to a culture of curiosity, rigor, and fun within the team
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines required.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail required.
Ability to work both independently and as a team member required.
Ability to work discretely with sensitive and confidential data required.
Education, Experience and Certifications:
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in sciences, social sciences, public policy, business or another relevant field required. Advanced degree in the sciences, social sciences, public policy, business, or another relevant field preferred
2+ years of project management or consulting experience.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
Strong project management skills in agile settings for technology projects required.
Experience working on real-world problems and passion for making a social impact required.
Expertise in Microsoft Excel for project tracking, budgeting and resource management (e.g. Understands how to use vlookup function) required.
Experience with online project management tools (e.g. Trello, GitHub) required.
Ability and experience managing multiple projects at the same time required.
Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills required.
Strong written and verbal communication required.
Proficient with Word, Google docs, and generally technically savvy preferred.
Product management experience preferred.
Experience with data science workflows and software engineering methodologies preferred.
