VDOT’s Traffic Engineering Division is seeking to fill a Data Scientist position. The position will provide support to the Districts and Traffic Engineering Division (TED) by managing and/or conducting traffic studies, and operations analysis & other related programs. The position will also support the Division’s efforts in Performance Measures and traffic data management programs. The Data Scientist will manage congestion, reliability and trend analysis programs and evaluate leading trends and innovations in the big data arena for implementation within operations at VDOT.
VDOT is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the Commonwealth’s roads, bridges and tunnels. Virginia has the third largest state-maintained highway system in the country, covering over 58,000 miles of roadway. Bachelor’s degree in Computer or Data Science; or equivalent experience in data analytics may substitute for degree.
Experience in analyzing data (preferably traffic), database management and data mining. Experience in statistical analysis. Considerable knowledge of data science, statistical analysis and interpretation, data and performance management. Demonstrated skill developing and managing large data sets, and integrating data from different sources and across different platforms.
Ability to work effectively in various software applications and database types.
Ability to work in Database Management platforms (such as in Oracle), Data Mining (such as in Tableau, SAS, JMP, and/or other BI tools), skilled in SQL, and in the use of Microsoft Access and other computer office products. Ability to present performance measures and other solutions through visualizations of large data. Working knowledge of big-data analytics concepts; knowledge of Traffic Engineering data analysis software, such as Synchro/ VISSIM, etc. is desirable. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and make presentations.
Experience in completion of alternatives analyses and report writing. Experience supervising consultants and/or staff.
A criminal history background check and a DMV record check are required.
