Position Description
The IT Specialist provides a front line contact for onsite and remote end-users to receive technical
support and maintenance within the organizations computing environment. The roles of this
position include: installing, diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading computer hardware
and software to ensure optimal performance. This position helps troubleshoots system issues,
provides administrative software support and participates in system implementation projects along
with requiring a responsive and highly productive professional who can work with all IT employees,
students, staff, faculty, and vendors to ensure continued success through corporate projects in
accordance with the mission, core values, and purposes of the university.
Minimum Qualifications
The IT Specialist must satisfy the following minimum qualifications:
1. High school diploma or GED equivalent required, advanced degree preferred; and
2. Two years of experience with Windows Operating Systems, Microsoft Office Applications, and
3. Two years of experience with Customer Service and/or IT Support.
Skills and Attributes
The IT Specialist must possess the following skills and attributes: patience, attentiveness, planning;
recordkeeping; reporting; training; answering the phone; filing; typing; programming; calculating;
problem solving; reasoning; performing preventive maintenance; reading – basic and technical;
writing – basic and technical; word processing; manipulating spreadsheets; working with computer
operating systems, networking hardware and a goal oriented focus.
Essential Functions
The IT Specialist performs the following essential functions:
1. Installs and configures workstations and servers.
2. Functions as first line of technical support for end-users (Students, Staff, Faculty).
3. Provides administrative software support to all NAU staff system-wide.
4. Troubleshoots software, operating systems, and hardware problems.
5. Performs periodic maintenance, repairs and upgrades to NAU hardware.
6. Creates/updates/maintains documentation of NAU software and hardware.
7. Serves as a backup for other team members, seeks cross-training in their areas of expertise, and
performs their duties in their absence.
8. Reviews/monitors daily system event logs and responds appropriately
9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Work Hours
Forty hours per week during daytime, evening, and weekend hours. Scheduled work hours may
change. Overtime may be required, or permitted with prior approval.
Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities
1. The IT Specialist reports to the Help Desk Lead and/or higher-level IT Supervisor.
2. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Physical Requirements
The IT Specialist must be able to speak, hear, see, read, write, type, dial, reach, and bend. This
position also requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 40 pounds.
Periodic travel, including airline travel and overnight stays, may be required.
