If selected you will serve as an Information Security Specialist responsible for a wide range of complex assignments and projects relative to information systems and security matters. As an expert, you will ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of systems, networks, and data. Initiate, develop, implement, and evaluate the security programs designed to anticipate, assess, and minimize system vulnerabilities such as intrusion detection or access authentication programs. Serve as a principal contact for coordination, implementation, and enforcement of information security policies. Recommend ways to protect the organization’s information and information systems. Provide expert advice, counsel, and instruction to employees and supervisors on security issues. Review and evaluate security incident response policies and identify the need for changes based on new technologies or threats. Participate in creating and maintaining system-security plans, contingency plans, risk assessments, and certification statements.

AND for the GS-12: 1 (one) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing IT related tasks such as: conducting systems security evaluations, audits and reviews, providing advice and instruction on security issues, and participating in the development and implementation of security programs designed to anticipate, assess, and minimize system vulnerabilities such as intrusion detection or access authentication programs.
And for the GS-13: 1 (one) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector, performing IT related tasks such as: developing, implementing, or evaluating the IT security programs of an organization, reviewing and evaluating security incident response policies, and identifying where there is a need for changes based on new security technologies or threats, providing advice and instructions to staff on IT security issues, and/or working with other IT specialists to build secure Web enabled applications.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
