As a Senior Virtualization and Systems Engineer, you will…

  • Design and implement virtualization solutions with platforms like VMware and Hyper-V, focusing on resource efficiency, high availability, and scalability.
  • Manage sophisticated system administration for various platforms including OSs, Virtualization, High Performance Computing (HPC) and NetApp in high-security environments ensuring efficient operation of computer systems, both stand-alone and networked.
  • Handle sophisticated LAN and WAN configurations and maintain robust cybersecurity measures in line with interpersonal standards.
  • Lead in diagnosing and resolving sophisticated software and hardware issues that arise in the virtual environment.
  • Guide the development of efficient virtualized solutions and mentor team members with your expertise in virtualization technology.
  • Influence system scalability and efficiency by analyzing key performance metrics to advise capacity planning and operational improvements.
  • Elevate operational standards by crafting crucial system security and configuration documents, ensuring compliance and setting quality benchmarks.
  • Stay updated with the latest technologies and cybersecurity trends.
  • Conduct vulnerability assessments and manage system updates.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have …

  • A Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent years of related professional work experience.
  • 7 or more years of hands-on experience with virtualization technologies in an either an enterprise or small network setting.
  • 3 or more years in a technical leadership role, focusing on architecting and administering environments using VMware vSphere and ESXi.
  • Expertise utilizing automation and orchestration tools for building, configuring, provisioning and running virtual machines.
  • Experience with VMware Horizon or VDI capabilities in an operational setting.
  • A firm understanding of networking, with knowledge of software defined networking using NSX, and storage technologies such as SAN, ISCSI, NFS and NAS.
  • Experience leading and motivating a team to deliver results and maintain the highest standards of quality.
  • Familiarity with security and regulatory compliance requirements as pertains to virtualization.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and present technical information clearly to a diverse audience.
  • Ability to independently resolve exciting problems by applying job knowledge, conducting research, and using external resources.
  • Solid understanding of Microsoft Active Directory, and proficiency with Windows and Linux system administration.
  • Hold Top Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You’ll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you…

  • Advanced experience with VMware Cloud Provider Program (VCPP) for usage metering and reporting, demonstrating a deep understanding of resource utilization and cost management in virtualized environments.
  • Experience with Tier 2 virtualization support with QEMU / KVM, Docker, Podman, or Virtual Box
  • Proficiency in enterprise automation and monitoring tools, such as VMware vRealize Orchestrator (VRO), vRealize Operations (VROPS), and vRealize Log Insight (VRLI), showcasing your ability to enhance operational efficiency and proactive system management.
  • Hands-on integration experience with major cloud providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure, and Google Cloud Platform, or familiarity with Hyper-V, reflecting a broad competency in diverse cloud environments and hybrid setups.
  • Expertise in cloud management tools like CloudBolt or Kion (formerly CloudTamer), indicating your ability to streamline cloud infrastructure management and implement effective cloud governance strategies.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development. $90,000 Annually

Maximum Rate

$330,000 Annually
