NOC Technician – Washington, DC

The NOC Technician is an entry to mid-level position that works with various departments within the company, as well as vendors, to schedule and approve maintenances performed on the Cogent network.
Analyze internal Change Management maintenance requests for network impact and resource requirements
Evaluate fiber, telco, and colocation provider notifications for network impact while maintaining data integrity
Identify conflicting network events and works with vendor to adjust scheduling
Prioritize events based on network impact
Create, accept, schedule, approve, and update work events on the Change Management calendar
Conduct failure and defect analysis review for After Action Report statements
The ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills with knowledge of telecommunications architecture.
The ability to identify and analyze conflicts between different network maintenance events on the Cogent network is absolutely key to being successful as a Cogent NOC Technician. This involves understanding of fiber ring topology.
Technical Expertise: Working knowledge of IP, including IP network architecture, peering relationships, and hierarchical model of core, distribution, and access is preferred.
Equipment Expertise: Working knowledge of Cisco switches, routers, and transport equipment like the ASR9000 router, 4900 series switches, and 3550 series switches is highly desired. Experience with 15454 MSTP system familiarity is a plus.
Application Expertise: Experience with Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, and Visio.
Familiarity with the internet service provider industry and telephone companies is required.
Effective written and verbal communications skills are required
Experience: 2-5 years of IP Backbone experience preferably in a Network Operations Center environment
Education: Degree in a technical field, or equivalent experience, certifications, and training
First and second shifts available. This position is located in our headquarters in Washington, DC with available shifts in Herndon, VA.
