Position Overview

The Principal Optical Integration and Test Engineer's function is to utilize optical engineering design theory in the conceptual design, development, fabrication, and test of precision optical systems and subsystems. The person in this role will take the lead on performing troubleshooting and problem resolution on prototypes and products that are in production. There will be significant hands-on involvement in the fabrication, integration and test of precision optical systems, subsystems, and assemblies. This is a senior technical role that will be responsible for teaching and mentoring less experienced engineers.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Applies in-depth and diversified knowledge of optical engineering design theory and manufacturing engineering principles, practices, and methods.
  • Designs and implements test procedures and evaluates and selects appropriate optical test methods and instrumentation. Understands full breadth of specifications used to characterize optical surfaces, sub-assemblies, and systems.
  • Develops detailed error budgets that verify our metrology methods can meet the design and fabrication requirements for the component or system under test.
  • Drafts acceptance test procedures and reviews data to verify compliance to customer requirements and specifications.
  • Evaluates manufacturability of optical designs and provides feedback to the internal design team.
  • Reviews customer requirements to propose and implement design-based solutions to meet specific application needs.
  • Provides support to the manufacturing team in the development and improvement of fabrication processes and methods, as well as developing new optical metrology and testing techniques.
  • Applies quantitative analysis in determining root cause of technical issue related to the fabrication, assembly, and testing of optical components and systems.
  • Provides mentorship to other engineers in optical metrology methods – test design, alignment, error budgets, error analysis, and tools.
  • Supports technical proposals on topics related to test methods, accuracy, capabilities, and cost of implementing these tests.
  • Supports customer meetings discussing capabilities, test results, and troubleshooting performance issues.

Education & Experience

  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 9 years of experience in optical metrology and a BS or MS in optical engineering, physics, or an equivalent technical discipline.
  • Hands-on experience with testing, alignment, and troubleshooting of optical component and system-level metrology required.
  • Demonstrated experience of creating detailed error budgets for complex test setups and an in-depth understanding of error sources of various instruments and tools required.

Skills & Other Requirements

  • Hands-on experience with optical testing (interferometry, infrared testing, laser alignment stations, imaging quality analysis, MTF, ensquared/encircled energy).
  • Knowledge of optical theory, aberration analysis, and optical design.
  • A working knowledge of radiometric measurement techniques, photo detectors, and electronics is desired.
  • Basic knowledge of optical fabrication technique for spheres, aspheres, and diamond turned optics.

  • Work in a cubicle area – must be able to work in environment where employees are on the phone / speaking causing potential distractions throughout the day.

Physical Requirements

  • Walking. Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
  • Talking. Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other employees accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Hearing. Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discriminations in sound.
  • Reaching. Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Use hands/fingers to type/handle. Operating a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.
  • Grasping. Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Lifting. Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Visual acuity. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
