Principal Software Engineer

As the Software Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing and implementing programs as required, to support the technical capabilities at Cox Automotive. This includes both the development of new programs and maintaining existing programs. In the role of Software Engineer, you will be expected to deliver timely responses to production issues, taking ownership of effectively seeing these issues through resolution. To be successful in the role of Software Engineer you must be able to work effectively in a fluid, fast-paced environment while maintaining good communication with management and team members.

Writes and maintains code within applications and systems to implement capabilities and features, improve performance and maintainability, while reducing technical debt in alignment with product and technology roadmaps. Plays a role in Agile planning, providing advice and guidance, and monitoring emerging trends.
Has defined authority and accountability for actions and decisions within a significant area of work, including technical, financial, and quality aspects. Establishes organizational objectives and assigns responsibilities.
Influences policy and strategy formation. Initiates influential relationships with internal and external customers, suppliers and partners at senior management level, including industry leaders. Makes decisions which impact the work of employing organizations, achievement of organizational objectives and financial performance.
Has a broad business understanding and deep understanding of own
specialism(s). Performs highly complex work activities covering technical, financial and quality aspects. Contributes to the implementation of policy and strategy. Creatively applies a wide range of technical
and/or management principles.
Absorbs complex information and communicates effectively at all levels to both technical and non-technical audiences. Manages and mitigates risk. Understands the implications of new technologies. Demonstrates clear leadership. Understands and communicates industry developments, and the role and impact of technology in the employing organization. Promotes compliance with relevant legislation. Takes the initiative to keep both own and colleagues’ skills up to date.
Works with Product Management to understand the challenges that customers and end users face in their day-to-day work and partner with them to design viable solutions.
Recommends viable solutions to processes, technology, and interfaces that improve the effectiveness of the teams and reduce technical debt.
Foresees capacity requirements for component usage and identifies limitations.
Provides input into story sizing, backlog grooming, and release planning.
Contributes to product and solution designs to address critical issues and complex problems.
Builds software applications across multiple platforms in response to the needs of stakeholders.
Understands technical architecture and writes software and automated tests that are aligned with agreed upon standards.
Performs trouble-shooting efforts and investigations when necessary.
Provides ongoing support, monitoring, and maintenance of deployed products.
Actively works with less experienced software engineers providing technical guidance and oversight.
Actively participates in the engineering community, staying up to date on new software technologies and best practices and shares insights with others in the organization.
Control system design practice within an enterprise or industry architecture.
Influence industry-based models for the development of new technology applications.
Develop effective implementation and procurement strategies, consistent with business needs.
Ensure adherence to relevant technical strategies, policies, standards and practices.
Design, code, test, correct and document programs and scripts from agreed specifications, and subsequent iterations, using agreed standards and tools, to achieve a well-engineered result.
Take part in reviews of own work and leads reviews of colleagues’ work.
Establish standards and procedures across the technology service lifecycle (including the development lifecycle) in the areas of systems integration and testing and ensures that practitioners adhere to them.
Manage application enhancements to improve business performance.
Excellent problem solving skills with strong attention to detail
Working experience in design, development, and implementation of highly scalable, high-volume software systems and components, client-facing web applications, and major Internet-oriented applications and systems
Working experience realizing applications from conception and design, to implementation and support
Working experience with application lifecycle methodologies (e.g. agile, iterative)
Working experience in analysis, design and programming
Working experience with appropriate database technology
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent combination of industry related professional experience and education
Masters/ PHD degree in Computer Science preferred
Scrum Developer Certification or equivalent
10+ years of working experience
