Position Overview

Southwest Electronic Energy (SWE), an industry leader in state-of-the-art custom battery systems for industrial, downhole, and subsea applications has an exciting and unique adventure in our growing R&D center for a Product Test engineer.

The position calls upon a broad range of expertise, and will allow a well-rounded engineer to tackle the responsibility of ensuring our products meet our quality and safety standards.

The successful candidate will be able to work within the SWE R&D and production teams, and contribute individually to the test, improvement, and production support of SWE batteries and electromechanical battery systems. The test engineer will have the opportunity to utilize electrical, mechanical and software skills while designing and sustaining a variety of test fixtures.

Success in this position requires the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment, strong motivation for pursuing project objectives, and the ability to learn new techniques and development processes.

Duties and Responsibilities

SWE is seeking a qualified Product Test engineer with 3+ years' experience in developing products or developing test solutions to validate the out-going quality of products. This individual will be experienced in common test software environments and quality practices in a manufacturing environment. The right candidate will be able to analyze the individual components of a product, devise tests for product quality coverage, and design electro-mechanical fixtures that will need to scale with volume production.

  • Collaborate with R&D design leads and production leads to determine product test requirements and recommend improvements.
  • Utilize Altium Designer to create and layout printed circuit assemblies (PCAs), such as Bed-Of-Nails PCAs, for proper test and programming of PCA-based products.
  • Use SolidWorks to design robust enclosures and fixtures to withstand a manufacturing environment.
  • Design intuitive graphical user-interfaces (GUIs) for assemblers to operate test fixtures using Python, LabVIEW or similar development environments.
  • Architect and code embedded firmware for microprocessor-driven fixtures.
  • Communicate with products using common serial communication interfaces and standards such as Modbus, I2C, SPI, SMBus, CAN, USB, RS232/RS485, Ethernet, etc.
  • Independently troubleshoot and problem-solve issues with existing fixtures, sometimes during production runs.
  • Properly document test fixture designs and operations for future sustaining.
  • Analyze test results and package for distribution.

Key Skills, Qualifications, Education and Experience

Minimum qualifications:

  • 3+ years test engineering experience or the development of production test equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience with Quality Management Systems (QMS).
  • Altium Designer experience or equivalent.
  • Experience using embedded software development tools: compilers, libraries, IDE, simulators, and emulators.
  • Skilled in a variety of programming languages
    1. Python, LabVIEW/LabWindows, C, C++, C#
  • Proficient in serial communications standards/interfaces such as Modbus, CAN, USB, RS485, I2C, SPI, Ethernet (TCP/IP, TCP/UDP, etc.).
  • Able to use SolidWorks (or similar) for mechanical concepts.
  • Troubleshooting skills with an analytical mindset.
  • Knowledge of quality standards and regulations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Experience:

  • Familiarity with batteries and battery management systems (BMS).
  • Circuit simulation tools such as PSPICE, LT SPICE or equivalent.
  • Experience in learning and developing new technologies.

Education:

  • BS in Engineering or similar

Physical Requirements

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and use of microscope. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. Position occasionally requires prolonged standing or sitting throughout the day. Occasional travel may be required (rarely, less than 5% of the time).
