The Systems Engineering team transforms sophisticated infrastructure systems into simple, efficient, and reliable solutions, focusing on measurable and scalable operational methodologies to drive business impact and cost savings!
The team executes on this mission by building cloud-native, automated, and scalable solutions to enable product engineering teams to safely deploy and consume compute resources. We leverage industry-leading technology stacks to accomplish our goals including automation pipelines, modularized infrastructure-as-code elements and centralized configuration management.
We support thousands of internally-developed microservices across ZG, hosted on both containerized and dedicated platforms. We apply software engineering techniques to create a resilient and compliant distributed environment of servers, operating systems, connectivity, and infrastructure services.
This team works closely with software development engineers from multiple product engineering organizations while supporting all users across the company’s multiple brands. Your work with us will be highly visible throughout Zillow Group and have a significant impact on all parts of the business.
We are a multi-disciplinary team spanning the core North American time zones. We value timely incident response and resolution and maintain a regular on-call rotation to maximize our impact and system availability!

About the role

As a member of the Systems Engineering team you will be responsible for the design, scalability, and resilience of our primarily Linux-based core compute platforms. You’ll be asked to craft new solutions and consumable offerings to enable our developers, re-architect legacy workloads and resources, contribute to regular maintenance activities, and build tooling and frameworks to ensure stability, security and compliance of our public and private cloud compute and storage infrastructure.

As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will:

• Work with and own core infrastructure components such as configuration management, deployment pipelines, DNS, virtualization clusters and cloud hyperscalers and of course, IaC defined resources.
• Prioritize reliability, performance, automation and cost-optimization in your daily work.
• Opportunity to work alongside experts in their field, and will be well positioned to both learn and teach as we look to develop and model standard methodologies across the organization.
• Closely align with partner teams such as Networking, Developer Experience, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), and Container Platform Engineering.
• You will also be positioned to contribute to incident and change management discussions as a trusted advisor.
• Be a valued teammate, identifying and driving quarterly deliverables.
• Prioritize metrics and reporting to raise insight into your efforts and those of others.

This role has been categorized as a teleworker position. Teleworkers do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice which must be identified to the Company. Employees may live in any part of Mexico, but preferably in Mexico City, as we would encourage attendance for occasional in-office events.

In addition to a competitive base salary and benefits, this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location.

Who you are

• 12+ years of proven experience in Infrastructure Engineering, Systems Engineering, DevOps, or Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) in a large enterprise environment.
• Proficient in Infrastructure-as-Code (eg. Terraform) and forge automation (eg. GitLab).
• Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining infrastructure solutions with at least one of the leading public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
• An expert in computer architecture and Linux-based operating systems.
• Understanding of containerized platforms and container image development.
• Passionate about good software engineering practices and processes.
• Possess a solid grasp of version control usage, principles, and best practices.
• Ability to effectively troubleshoot and diagnose performance and functionality issues in high-impact environments.
• Curiosity to deep-dive into both legacy and industry leading technologies to seek understanding, ensure reliability, advise partners, and proactively lead obsolescence.
• Proven experience with Python and functional understanding of other languages such as Java or Go.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to convey sophisticated concepts beyond the technical community to gain acceptance and adoption.
• Solid understanding of networking concepts and challenges such as load balancing, IPsec, DNS, and access control.
• Experience with instrumentation for monitoring and logging the health and availability of services.
• Freely influences systems architecture and demonstrates ownership of architectural decisions.
• Comfortable navigating the complexities of cloud security and compliance.
