Software Developer (*******)

Background: The Surveillance Systems Group conducts research on integrated sensing and decision support architectures for Air Traffic Control. The group is currently performing research and development into the impact of new generations of secondary surveillance systems on the National Airspace System (NAS), with two major approaches. In the initial approach, the Project Team is analyzing system architecture, implementation, and operational use concepts to assess the theoretical impacts of proposed new systems on the NAS. The results of this research are analyses used by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to determine the effects that the proposed new systems would have on the performance of already-deployed NAS systems.

In addition, The Group is developing the Generation Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS X), also on behalf of the FAA. This Project Team is developing ACAS X in modern high-level computer software languages and algorithm approaches. It is also developing a high-fidelity software simulation of the FAA’s NAS, termed the NAS Surveillance Framework (NSF), which will be used to examine the impact on NAS surveillance performance by newly developed surveillance systems.

A software programmer is needed to participate in development of airborne safety systems and related simulation systems. The specific focus of this position is support to a Laboratory Project Team in development of system architecture, design, implementation and test of software prepared for evaluation in software-based simulation environments and in actual flight tests.

Assignment: Support other NSF and ACAS X systems analysis and development personnel to develop system architecture and software implementations. The assignment includes module and system tests to ensure proper implementation.
