Overview

The Software Engineering Manager I leads a team of software engineers responsible for the delivery of core business systems to the organization – inclusive of system upgrades, changes and systems support and maintenance. The Software Engineering team plays a critical role in the leadership of application change and release management activities, ensuring that processes and resources are in place to provide continuous support and improvement to the business applications.

Responsibilities

Major Duties:
Personnel Management: Encourages the growth of all direct and indirect reports through skills development, objectives and goal setting. Holds direct reports accountable for meeting performance standards and departmental performance goals. Mentors staff, measures staff performance and completes regular performance reviews and rankings. Resolves employee issues in an effective and consistent manner.

Team Management: Oversees both direct and indirect reporting relationships within the team to ensure the highest level of competency and execution of business focused objectives. Provides metrics and statistics to measure the operational effectiveness of the team. Ensures all established processes have measurements in place, as well as a method for review and process improvement.

Project Team Work: Leads the software engineering members of a project team in completion of development-related tasks of a project. Managers the development documentation of the business requirements, objectives, deliverables, and specifications on a project-by-project basis.Oversees the turnover process to production support and customers upon completion of development, testing, and documentation for software engineering.

Software Development: Leads the software engineering team in collaborating with project team members, program users and internal and external stakeholders in the conceptualization and development of software applications. Oversees the overall development effort on projects and partners with project managers to establish, maintain and identify and mitigate risk to software engineering project schedules.

Issue Resolution: Drives highest level support for incoming incident tickets from end users to resolve application and software issues. Collaborates with peers, managers and customers to resolve problems with software products or company software systems. Is accountable for delivering solutions to problem areas.

Critical Competencies:

Technical Expertise: Maintains technical knowledge and best practices with a focus on high-level relationships between systems and tools. Solves business and technical problems by leveraging expertise and relationships from across the organization. Able to analyze across a range of platforms and applications and see interconnections between organizational systems that others may miss.

Decision Making: Takes the lead on projects and in work teams and able to make decisions in a timely manner. Able to balance data with intuition and experience when making decisions. Willing to become involved in and make decisions about issues in areas that are initially unfamiliar. Demonstrates a bias for initiating action on decisions and is seldom a bottleneck due to decision procrastination.

Project Management: Creates project plans that organize and align development team efforts and that anticipate resources necessary to accomplish the project plan. Provides tasks, milestones and clear direction to software engineers assigned to projects. Monitors task completion and milestone achievement. Works effectively with the executive project management office and across IT and business functions and departments.

Communication: Establishes rapport and is straightforward and approachable. Listens carefully, asks pertinent questions, responds effectively and adapts personal style to suit the audience. Speaks, writes and presents in a clear and concise manner. Able to comprehensibly convey technical ideas to a non-technical audience. Understands the overall IT strategy and is able to communicate the vision to team members and business stakeholders. Maintains and grows diverse network of contacts and relationships over time.

Supervisory Skills: Provides team with appropriate amounts of work and responsibility. Assigns tasks to employees with relevant skills and follows up on task completion. Communicates what good employee performance looks like and distributes awards in a fair manner. Uses best practices for feedback and coaching, confronts problem behavior directly and administers any necessary disciplinary action to correct problem performance.

Talent Management: Hires strategically based on current and future team needs, using appropriate competency-based tools for assessment and interviews. s organization’s mission, vision and values with team member, customers and other stakeholders. Creates a sense of camaraderie among team members and celebrates team success. Guides team members in developing career paths and in finding their strengths and opportunities for improvement. Works to identify individuals with potential to develop into more demanding roles.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

– Bachelor’s degree in MIS, computer science or business management with technical focus or equivalent experience in software engineering, business or information systems
– 3+ years experience leading teams and/or projects in the development and maintenance of multi-tiered applications through all phases of software development life cycle
– Knowledge of SQL Server or equivalent relational database management system
– Comprehension of source code management systems
– Understanding of how multiple development technologies, languages and platforms are used to build software products
– Proficiency with office productivity tools such as Microsoft Excel, Word and Visio

Preferred Qualifications:

– Experience with corporate governance and developing business cases and return on investment analyses
