The research applications developer (RAD) is an entry-level programming job at the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project. The RAD supports projects across the research department with a focus on programming and analysis. Responsibilities include collecting, inputting and maintaining data on various extremist groups from multiple sources and performing analyses in support of publishing, research, and investigation priorities.
Primary Job Functions:
Develops applications to support research team
Collects, inputs and maintains data via various sources e.g. web scraping
Conducts analyses based on data collection efforts
Collaborates with external stakeholders on data projects
Writes for IP publishing outlets
Provides research on general and special projects
Monitors various Internet sources for intelligence, threats
Education and Related Work Experience:
B.A. degree in computer science or a minor in CS preferred;
Self-starter with strong organizational skills;
Demonstrated writing ability.
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
Experience working with programming languages including Python, R;
Experience working with versioning software like Git;
Knowledge of MEAN (Mongo, Express, Angular, and Node) a plus;
Natural-language processing experience a plus;
Ability and interest in sifting through very large amounts of data (text or quantitative data) and extracting key elements for tracking, exposing activities, uncovering networks and relationships, etc;
Must be thorough and have continual attention-to-detail when entering data;
Meticulous data gathering, reporting, and documentation skills to ensure accuracy and maintain a very high level of data integrity;
Demonstrated initiative to see projects through to completion;
Demonstrated ability to work cross functionally with internal and external stakeholders to meet outcomes;
A strong interest and commitment to the mission of SPLC.
