Position Summary

This position is within the Research Programming Unit of the Carolina Population Center. It provides data management and analysis under the direction of investigators for an NIH-funded program of projects working in the U.S. This program of projects has over $6 million annually in grant awards. The projects involve manipulating data from original data collection performed by external subcontractors and laboratories and these data must be merged with previous rounds of longitudinal data collected. A high level of skill at data management and sophisticated programming techniques for efficient processing of the data and associated analyses is required. This position works on all aspects of original data collection and acquisition of existing data (e.g., birth records), the associated data management, documentation, and data analysis with a team of senior programmer/analysts in the Research Programming Unit and with social scientists and epidemiologists. He/she is responsible for constructing complex variables and documenting the programming techniques used to generate these variables, which are used by over 50,000 data users to whom the data are made available.

Educational Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, math, or Engineering or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in business application consulting or development; or

Bachelor’s degree and some computer coursework from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in business application consulting or development; or

Associate’s degree in Computer Programming and two years of experience in application consulting or development; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications and Experience

Experience with SAS or Stata is required. The demonstrated ability in SAS and/or Stata to manage large, complex, multi-level data. Experience with statistical analysis procedures within SAS and/or Stata. Demonstrated ability to take responsibility for the planning, management, and analysis of complex data in a data-driven project.

The following experience is desired. Experience with population-based surveys, data cleaning and post-processing, data documentation, dissemination to the research community, and technical user support are highly desirable. Experience with analysis of complex survey data is highly desirable. Ability to work with a team of faculty and senior programmer/analysts, taking direction while providing independent analysis and suggestions about technical solutions to meet the needs of the project.
